First impressions

View - A white man with black hair apart from a section in the front that is white as if from age, approx 5' 10" (180cm,) short trimmed beard. Appears in his 30s or 40s. Has a fresh scar/skin damage vertically over his left eye.

Clothing - He wears a dark grey/black expeditioner's uniform with a fur-lined hood. Reminiscent of a formal naval uniform.

Speech - Speaks with a light French accent.

Movement - Moves like a fighter and is ready to be attacked or to attack in an instant. Is dramatic and performative with his gestures, often seems as if he's performing in a play the way his speech is coupled with the appropriate nod, point or wink.

Smell - Ink and a floral soap. Dirt/earth.

Shift + Corruption — Ruminantia

Corruption — Based on Baphomet.

September 2025 — Arrived in Karteria, immediately killed himself hastening his corruption. Returning from being dead a week later with fuzzy ears, oval pupils and the start of horns.

October 2025 — Body hair grows and thickens. Horns grow and start curling.

November 2025 — Back begins itching towards the end of the month, the precursor to his wings. Chest starts growing, though only noticeable to him.

December 2025 — Wings arrive. Chest growth more distinct, noticeable when wearing light clothing (for that reason he's sticking to thick winter gear.)

January 2025 — Start of hooves and tail.

Immortality — Verso is immortal with fast healing and regeneration and the ability to manipulate his legs independently from his top half and speak from them when severed at the waist.

Personality answers:

• Who in your character's canon influenced the most growth in your character? What do they think about this character?

  Maelle. Maelle is in some ways the instigator of all the events in the game. She is (in brief) the sister of Verso Dessendre, Alicia Dessendre reincarnated into the world of the canvas as the child of a loving couple who were soon after taken by the gommage, a phenomena that once a year erases everyone above a certain age. Verso has kept an eye on her as she has grown up.
  
  Maelle is headstrong and courageous with a brittle quality that comes from the traumatic life she has lead. The key moments that show Verso's growth are that he goes from only pursuing his own desires, allowing the man who acts as father to Maelle to die due to his fear she would return to her home without completing the mission he wanted her to follow; to telling her everything, sharing with her his despair and exhaustion in the hope that she will understand his reason for wanting her to return to the world outside the canvas.
  
  He believes she is the favourite child of her father, and sees why. Verso is a painted image of her brother, but is perhaps the closest of the painted Dessendres to their real counterparts, and he is able to see the truth of the parable her father painted to represent her: that he wanted to see her fly. Outside of the canvas, Maelle (as Alicia) is disfigured by burns from the fire that killed the real Verso, but Verso still believes that she can live a fulfilling life in that world, and at the end of the game seeks to end the canvas's world not just to rest himself but to allow her to find life in reality.

• What does your character think about physical appearances? Are they the sort to meticulously primp themselves, or could they not care less?

  Verso is vain. While after a certain point Verso stopped appearing to age, the exception to this was his hair, which turned entirely white. Because of this he dyes his hair black, apart from the streak of white in his fringe that the gestral who sees to it always messes up. He also keeps his scars though he could allow them to heal, which he says is because they make him look attractively dark and rugged. This is true to an extent, however it is also due to a tendency to self-flagellate, keeping the scar over his eye as a reminder of the relationship he has with his father.

• What is your character's biggest ambition at their current canon point? To what lengths would they go to see it to fruition?

  Verso's ambition is to see the end of the cycle of grief and trauma that traps both the real and painted Dessendre family. He wished to see the success of expedition 33, having them defeat the paintress allowing the real Renoir Dessendre, the father of the family, to claim the chroma (life energy) of all the painted people created by Aline Dessendre, the mother of the family, erasing them, and then the canvas itself once Aline and Alicia returned from it.
  
  Throughout the game, Verso goes to extreme lengths to see his goal met. He allows Gustave to die, he sees his oldest friend's "son" die and reincarnate, he lies at every turn, both by omission and outright, he kills his father and sees all the humans in his world apart from his family and Maelle erased.

• What would be your character's lowest, darkest moment they've lived through? How did they respond to their troubles and face their demons?

  Verso's lowest, darkest moment happened long before the start of canon when he was travelling with one of the early expeditions, a search and rescue party created following an event called the fracture which flung the city of Lumière to the edge of the canvas.
  
  The first expedition following the fracture, expedition zero, had just two survivors, Verso and his father, Renoir, all others were killed by nevrons on the continent. In a subsequent expedition undertaken with a woman named Julie, Verso was grievously injured, half of his torso destroyed but was healed moments later. This was seen by Julie who was deeply unnerved and came to believe that Verso and Renoir must have murdered the rest of expedition zero. Because of this belief, she, along with a few other members of the expedition, trapped and tortured Verso, believing him to be a spy of the paintress. He was unable to provide sufficient explanations to them, believing they would think him insane if he were to reveal the truth of their world, so in order to escape, Verso murdered Julie and the other members of the expedition.
  
  Verso still regrets the actions he took more than six decades later, and Julie is the one person he would bring back from the dead if given the option.
